Back to Workshop Saturday

There are no instruments provided, so you have to bring the instrument(s) and everything else you need (sticks, belt) yourself. During the workshops ear protection is recommended. Also don't forget to bring a fitting tuning key for every instrument you bring.

Afoxé rhythm has its origins in Afro-Brazilian culture and is directly linked to candomblé rhythms. It emerged in Bahia, mainly in Salvador, as an adaptation of the sacred rhythms played in the terreiros to a more profane and carnival context. Afoxé was consolidated with the blocos de afoxé, carnival groups that took the rhythms, dances and songs of African rituals to the streets. One of the oldest and most influential blocos is the Filhos de Gandhy. The characteristic instruments of afoxé include the agogô, atabaques, caxixi and xequerê, which together create an engaging and cadenced rhythmic base, similar to ijexá, one of the chimes of candomblé. This rhythm has become one of the pillars of Bahian music, influencing MPB and artists such as Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso and Marisa Monte.
